Who was Robert Miles?
Robert Miles was a pioneer in the Trance world and was celebrated for his many iconic tracks in the 90s.
He was born Roberto Concina to Italian immigrants in Switzerland in 1969 and later moved to Friuli, Italy, when he was a young boy, and took up the piano.
In the mid 80s he began working as a DJ in some private radio networks and Italian clubs. During this time he began adopting the stage name Robert Milani.
At the young age of 21 he established his own recording studio and pirate station by using up all his savings.
In 1994, he began work on his iconic trance track Children, which was released in 1995. He went on to release a number of hits afterwards.
Robert Miles has received a number of awards including a Brit Award for Best International Male Newcomer.
Recently Robert had been focusing on radio - in 2012 he had founded his own online FM alternative radio station called OpenLab, which broadcasts from Ibiza.
How did Robert Miles die?
The legendary DJ and producer died after a 9 month battle with cancer, DJ Mag Italia reports.
His radio station confirmed in a statement that Robert died from stage four metastatic cancer.
'Robert was more than just an artist, he was a pioneer, a creator, an inspiration, a son, a father, out friend.
'Robert passed away peacefully last night after a courageous battle with stage four metastatic cancer over the last nine months.
'Throughout it he was strong, determined, incredibly brave and did everything he could to fight this horrendous disease.'

His most famous song, without a doubt, was his 1995 mega hit Children.

Despite the fact that initial sales were slow, momentum gathered and it ended up garnering Robert Miles worldwide fame in the music world.
Children has since gone platinum in a number of countries, including the UK and France.
He went on to release album Dreamland in 1996, which was a huge success and included a number of memorable songs. This included: Princess of Light, Children, Fantasya, In the Dawn, Landscape and Red Zone.
The album was also well-received by contemporary critics.
Miles released his second album, 23am, the following year. It included four vocal songs and featured instruments such as the saxophone and trumpet as well as synthesizers.
In 2001 he then released Organik, which was considered very different to his previous albums, and featured 12 tracks: Endless, It’s All Coming Back, Separation, Endless Trance Shapes, Connections and Release Me. It received positive reviews despite not charting.
He then released albums Miles_Gurtu in 2004 and Thirteen in 2011.
Why did he adopt his stage name 'Robert Miles'?
Robert originally began playing his set under the name of Robert Milani in the 80s before eventually adopting the name Robert Miles.
He later revealed that he chose the surname Miles because it was symbolic of the the musical journey awaiting him.
The DJ was born Roberto Concina.
